Statement 2026
My work explores how we observe and navigate our immediate surroundings, positioning the canvas as the site of negotiation between the structural systems we use to map the world and our embodied experience of it. I place the certainty of measurement and linear perspective in direct confrontation with the fluid nature of immediate optical perception. By leaving all paint and pencil marks visible, the surface becomes a play of incompatibles; an accumulation of calculated intervals against the shifting boundaries of sight.
Rendered on a familiar window-sized scale, these paintings operate as intimate yet immersive openings. Rather than presenting a pristine, buttoned-down realism, the work exposes the physical traces of its own making, leaving the corrections, missteps, and structural scaffolding intact. This refusal to conceal the process works to invite the beholder to, as Judith Wolfe suggests, inhabit ambiguity, such that dwelling in the world is not a matter of fixed coordinates, but a continuous, living state of emergence.
